Doylestown Democrats ExComm Statement regarding Black Lives Matter

America "has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met."

— Martin Luther King, Jr. ("Other America")

The demonstrations proclaiming that Black lives Matter and protesting police violence have been largely peaceful. To the extent that any of the rioting can be legitimately blamed on the BLM movement, let us not forget MLK's warning that riots are 'the language of the unheard'.

He went on to say, "I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air. Certain conditions continue to exist in our society which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots."

We must seriously examine our institutions in the context of white privilege in order to make sense of the current moment. We must see that racial injustice is woven into every American institution. This is not news! The the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders — known as the Kerner Commission — came to this conclusion 5 weeks before the assignation of Martin Luther King, Jr. and yet, all these decades later, we have failed in our promises of freedom and justice for all.
